My name is Avery Sloan. I am a junior at Elon University, where I am pursuing a major in journalism and a minor in leadership studies and political science. I am the managing editor of The Pendulum at Elon News Network, which is our student-run newspaper that prints once a week. Last semester, I studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark through DIS. Here, I continued to study journalism through classes such as Photojournalism and New Media and Changing Communities.

At Elon, my role at ENN involves assigning all content for the paper, working with and training reporters, photographers, and designers, and ensuring balanced coverage for my Elon community. I have previously served as the politics editor and I am passionate about local news and telling stories for my school community and the broader Alamance County area. Through attending town council meetings, covering elections, and reporting on state and federal legislation I have seen the importance of local politics and how crucial journalism is to accessing information. Upon graduation, I plan on reporting on local news and long-form storytelling.

Outside of the university, I also interned for the town of Elon for a summer and worked on rolling out conditional zoning, updating the town's website, and working between departments to coordinate its social media presence.

On campus, I also work at the front desk of Elon's student center and am a member of Elon University's leadership fellow scholarship program. Through this, I have completed community service by working at a Title I school and have focused on civil rights and social justice through a week long trip to Alabama.
